The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Peking University Third Hospital has always upheld the宗旨 of "Unity, Dedication, Pragmatism, and Innovation," building a high-level team renowned nationwide. Established in 1958, the department, as a Key Discipline of the Ministry of Education, has developed into a nationally renowned center for cardiovascular disease diagnosis, treatment, research, and education. As a National Key Clinical Specialty, it serves not only as a national training base for coronary interventional therapy, cardiac pacing and electrophysiology, cardiac rehabilitation, and cardiovascular specialty nursing, but also stands as an industry benchmark through its profound academic accumulation and practical capabilities. In March 1988, the Institute of Vascular Medicine was established within the department, becoming one of the first units in China to establish basic research laboratories within cardiovascular clinical departments, pioneering the integrated development model combining clinical practice and basic research in the cardiovascular field. Through years of development, the department has now established three major platforms: the National Key Laboratory of Vascular Homeostasis and Remodeling, the Key Laboratory of the National Health Commission, and the Beijing Key Laboratory, continuously driving frontier exploration and technological breakthroughs in the cardiovascular field. The department currently has 251 staff members, including 26 experts with senior professional titles, 12 experts with associate senior titles, and 12 full-time research personnel. The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine serves as a postdoctoral research station, currently hosting 11 postdoctoral supervisor candidates (including jointly appointed), 10 doctoral supervisors, and 13 master's supervisors. It is home to renowned cardiovascular experts including Han Qide, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Dong Erdan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering; Tang Yida, recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and Distinguished Professor of the Changjiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education; and Xu Ming, recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and New Century Excellent Talents of the Ministry of Education. Built upon the foundational contributions of senior cardiovascular experts and led by the discipline leader, Professor Tang Yida (Vice President), and Department Director, Professor Cui Ming, the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine has achieved comprehensive development across clinical service, education, and research. Currently, the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine operates 135 open beds, with an annual outpatient volume exceeding 210,000 visits, over 11,000 discharged patients per year, and nearly 10,000 interventional cardiovascular procedures performed annually. The average length of hospital stay has reached a historic low of 3.42 days, placing the department among the top general hospitals in Beijing in terms of both medical volume and efficiency. The department has established specialized clinics for cardiovascular metabolism, valvular heart disease, coronary intervention follow-up, cardiac rehabilitation, hypertension, heart failure, atrial fibrillation and anticoagulation, pacing therapy, and pregnancy-related hypertension. As one of the first units in China to perform coronary interventional therapy, the department completed the country's first percutaneous laser coronary angioplasty in 1988. Currently, its imaging- and FFR-based functional assessment-guided interventional therapy and minimally invasive staged hybrid coronary revascularization are both at the leading level domestically. The team consistently prioritizes medical innovation and routinely performs electrophysiological procedures including "one-stop" atrial fibrillation radiofrequency ablation combined with left atrial appendage occlusion, pulsed field ablation for atrial fibrillation, and cardiac neural ablation. Since its establishment, the Smart ECG Center has completed over one million ECG case diagnoses. With strong support from the Haidian District Health Commission, the center has established the "Haidian District Remote ECG Diagnosis and Guidance Center," achieving a closed-loop hierarchical diagnosis and treatment system for cardiovascular diseases characterized by "primary-level examination, superior-level diagnosis, and rapid response," creating a replicable and scalable "Haidian Pilot" model. After five years of development, the Structural Heart Disease specialty group has continuously improved its diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities. The techniques currently performed by the group encompass transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), transcatheter edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (TEER), transcatheter tricuspid edge-to-edge repair (T-TEER), percutaneous pulmonary valve intervention, atrial septal shunt creation, atrial septal defect closure, ventricular septal defect closure, and patent ductus arteriosus closure, covering the major structural heart disease interventional techniques. Additionally, the group is exploring renal denervation for the treatment of hypertension, continuously expanding the scope of diagnosis and treatment. The Department of Cardiovascular Medicine is one of the earliest departments in China to initiate and lead cardiac exercise rehabilitation, with distinct advantages in athlete cardiac ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging assessment. The cardiovascular nursing team is among the first batch of "Cardiovascular Specialty Nurse Training Bases" accredited by the Chinese Nursing Association and the Beijing Nursing Association, and also serves as a "Beijing ICU Specialty Nurse Training Base," having trained numerous professional nursing personnel for the industry. In terms of integrating clinical practice with scientific research, the department has achieved remarkable results in translational medicine research on cardiovascular metabolism, coronary artery disease, and heart failure. It undertakes multiple national and provincial/ministerial key projects and currently has 2 recipients of the National Natural Science Foundation's "Distinguished Young Scholars" award and 1 recipient of the "Excellent Young Scholars" award. Furthermore, the department undertakes substantial teaching responsibilities for undergraduate students, graduate students, resident physicians, and visiting physicians. Assisting and training regional cardiovascular medical professionals is also one of the department's important missions. Looking ahead, the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine will continue to share high-quality medical resources, provide talent development opportunities, and engage in multi-faceted collaborations with sister hospitals and departments. At the same time, the department has long been actively responding to the calls of the Party and the state by dispatching professional personnel to participate in foreign aid missions, rural support programs, and border region assistance, living up to the expectations of the people and completing tasks assigned by the Party and the state with high quality.
